HUI, based in Cromberg, is part of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.). The nonprofit group’s goal is “Ensuring excellence and changing lives through equine-assisted activities and therapies.”

In 1969 the program was formed as the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association to promote equine-assisted activities and therapies for individuals with special needs.

Locally, clients learn horse skills such as grooming, saddling, bridling and riding. They also learn about letters, colors, patterns, sequencing and other life skills.

Students range in age from preschool to adulthood. Some participants have been in the program since its inception 19 years ago.

HUI is currently a mobile operation, operating out of the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds. Clients come from Sierra Valley, Loyalton and Lake Almanor, but the majority of participants reside in Portola, Quincy and Greenville.

The rideathon fundraiser begins at 9 a.m. Aug. 25 at Marie Anderson’s arena in Sloat. Up to 30 riders will trail ride from Long Valley to Long Valley Ranch, along the creek past a successful plug-and-pond restoration project.

Riders must get pledges from sponsors and pay a $25 entry fee. Money raised will be used for the HUI sponsorship program and will allow clients to take classes at reduced rates.

A barbecue lunch will be served at the Sloat Town Hall after the ride.
