75 YEARS AGO........1937

Funeral services were held in Crescent Mills for pioneer Plumas County resident Nicholas Stampfli, 89, who is believed to have resided in Plumas County longer than any other person. A native of Switzerland, he settled in Meadow Valley in 1850, moving to Indian Valley in 1857 and had a ranch near Crescent Mills since 1863. He is survived by four sons and seven daughters.

75 YEARS AGO...........1937

The Plumas County Grand Jury will be asked to sift through evidence of a possible conspiracy plot by Plumas County Sheriff Deputy Fred Shumate with three convicted burglars. The investigation was ordered by Plumas County Superior Court Judge J.O. Moncur this week. According to a report, Shumate allegedly discussed the burglary plans with them of the G.R. Clark Store in Taylorsville prior to the December 4, 1936 crime.

Plumas County registration of voters was decreased this week by 671 according to Plumas County Election Clerk John Donnenwirth.

Gambling in all forms must cease in Plumas County by March 1 according to Plumas County District Attorney M.C. Kerr and Plumas County Sheriff Braden, acting on orders from the California State Attorney General. The edict applies to all slot machines, pinball games, blackjack and crap tables throughout the county.

The Feather River Highway has remained open as heavy storms gripped the entire state of California.

In the first month of 1937 (January), there were 16 deaths and 15 births recorded in Plumas County.

75 YEARS AGO..........1937

With the arrival of snow Tuesday, the extreme cold, dry spell of the last two weeks has been broken. Snow measuring seven to 12 inches fell throughout areas of Plumas County overnight.

A special train brought 350 snow sports enthusiasts to Portola from Sacramento Valley on Sunday.
