75 YEARS AGO..........1938

Plumas County Sheriff Braden was ordered by Plumas County Superior Court Judge Moncur Monday to destroy 19 slot machines that were seized in Blairsden and Portola.

The deadly blister rust, deadly to white pine trees, has gained a foothold in the Plumas National Forest. Presence of the disease was found on the underside of leaves of gooseberry plants on the Plumas.

75 YEARS AGO..........1938

A hearing on a petition to incorporate Portola as a city will be held before the Plumas County Board of Supervisors this week.

Pavement is being laid on the new nine mile section of the Feather River Highway built last year from Spanish Creek to the entrance of Quincy from the north.

The contract was awarded for $5,000 and the gravel is being taken from Spanish Creek.

75 YEARS AGO..........1938

The 20 room Mt. Tomba Hotel in Sloat burned to the ground last week on September 28. Incendiarism is suspected. Total damage is estimated at $12,000. The restaurant and some other property was saved by a forest service tank crew summoned from Mohawk Ranger Station.

Pauline Frederick, famed stage and movie actress who died in Hollywood this week at the age of 53, was a frequent guest at the Feather River Inn during her marriage to her fourth husband H.C. Leighton, a Los Angeles hotelman.

The entire town of Johnsville was threatened with destruction when fire broke out at the Canyon Inn. With water pressure extremely low due to the restoration of the town water system, the fire had to be fought with wet sacks and dirt.
