Pleading for the preservation of California's wilderness, California Governor Frank F. Merriman addressed a convention of some 70 California newspaper publishers at Johnsville Saturday night as the guest of the annual Plumas County visit of the California Newspaper Publishers Association. The week-long convention included a Governor’s dinner at Bucks Lake Friday night and a Governor's trout breakfast Sunday morning.

75 YEARS AGO...........1937

The Plumas County visit of members of the California Newspaper Publishers Association will attract prominent state officials and outstanding newspaper publishers to be held over the weekend at the Canyon Inn in Johnsville, the fabulous summer resort. California Governor Frank P. Merriman will be in attendance at the Governor's party to be held at Bucks Lake Lodge Friday night. The CNPA consists of 414 newspapers throughout California.

75 YEARS AGO......1937

The Beckwourth Memorial monument will be dedicated at Beckwourth Pass this Sunday by the Las Plumas Chapter of the Daughters of the Golden West of Portola. Beckwourth was an Indian scout who discovered the low pass through the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1851. He was employed by the city of Marysville to build a trail from Sierra Valley to Marysville by way of Mohawk, American Valley and Bucks Ranch. He owned a trading post in Sierra Valley, the building now used as a dairy house on the Guido Ramelli Ranch located two miles east of Beckwourth.

75 YEARS AGO.........1937

Thirty acts form all parts of the Feather River Wonderland competed in the second annual Plumas County Amateur Hour. Sponsored by the Plumas County Chamber of Commerce, first place was won by Elsie Rice Gilbert of Twain. She won an airplane trip to San Francisco to attend the Golden Gate bridge Fiesta.  Her three-day stay in San Francisco will give her the opportunity to deliver a message that the new $8,000,000 Feather River Highway is soon to be opened into California's premier vacation county. Cash prizes of $20.00, $12.50, $5.00 and $2.00 were also awarded.

75 YEARS AGO...........1937

One hundred ageratum bedding plants, the fast growing annual, were planted in the memorial plot in front of the Plumas County courthouse this week. The plot belongs to the American Legion Auxiliary.

The secretary of the Plumas County Chamber of Commerce Earl McDaniel, 67, died suddenly but the chamber-sponsored second annual amateur hour show that he had worked on with great vigor, will go on.
