The Portola Lady Tigers basketball squad advanced to the North Section semifinals last week with a pair of playoff wins at home. The girls defeated the Durham High Trojans 47 to 43 on Tuesday, Feb. 22, and then whipped the Quincy Trojans 55 to 33 Saturday, Feb. 26.

The Durham girls came to Portola looking to avenge an early season loss to the Lady Tigers. However, the Cats pounced on the Trojans early and by the end of the opening act, led 10 to 6. In the second quarter, the Fighting Tigers outscored Durham by five points to lead 24 to 15 at intermission.

The Chester High School boys’ basketball team advanced to the Division V semifinals with two playoff wins last week over Weed and Modoc.

Chester, seeded fifth, opened with a 67-44 victory over 12th-seeded Modoc Feb. 23, and then went on the road to upset fourth-seeded Weed 64-57 in overtime last Saturday.

Last Saturday’s game at Weed was postponed from Friday night due to the snowstorm.

Weed outscored Chester 16-14 in the first quarter, 13-11 in the second quarter and 11-10 in the third quarter, but then Chester outscored Weed 15-10 in the fourth quarter to tie the game at the end of regulation.

Chester coach Joe Gilmour said that prior to the fourth quarter, his players began settling on outside shots too much, so he encouraged them to take it to the hoop and attack the rim.

Can hunters sell game for medicinal reasons?

Q. If a person buys a hunting license and a bear tag and goes out and hunts a bear legally, then that bear belongs to that hunter.

If that hunter takes all the usable parts of the bear, then those bear parts belong to that hunter. But if the bear and all of the usable parts belong to the hunter, then why can’t the hunter sell the parts of the bear to other cultures that can use them for medicinal reasons?

The Portola High School wrestling team traveled to Redding for the Mid Valley League Championships Saturday, Feb. 12.

Competing in seven of the 14 weight classes, the Portola wrestlers placed third overall in team standings.

Portola coach Jason Klemesrud described the outcome as “a huge victory in itself.”

Klint Williams, wrestling at 160 pounds for Portola, won first place and received a league championship award.
