Last week’s boys’ basketball game between Chester and Lassen promised to be good, so two sports editors showed up to cover the same match.
With me there supporting Chester, and Susanville’s Kayleen Taylor there rooting for Lassen, we stood under opposite baskets, taking photos and notes of our respective teams as they battled it out.
Prior to the match we gave one another some good-natured ribbing, each confident that our team was going to win.
With Chester leading by nine points at halftime, I began to rub it in. Taylor wasn’t fazed and continued to back her Grizzlies.
Once the final buzzer sounded and Chester was victorious, I did my best not to gloat. I offered condolences to Taylor, to which she responded with harsh words.
Got to love her competitiveness, but I was glad to be on the winning side. Better luck next time Kayleen!
The popular ranger-led snowshoe walks will be offered from the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center near the park’s southwest entrance beginning Dec. 26.
“Bring your friends and family to the park and experience the fun of snowshoeing through a red fir forest blanketed in deep snow,” said Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz.
Frenchman and Davis Lakes
Winter weather has slowed, but not stopped the fishing. The recent cold weather brought ice to Frenchman and Davis lakes. However, recent warmer weather has melted some of that ice.
Frenchman was reported to be ice free in front of the dam while the north end of the lake had turning from ice to slush. Anglers were doing well with nightcrawlers and PowerBait where they could find open water.

The Portola High School boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams each won first place at the Tiger Classic, the annual tournament hosted by Portola last Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 9-11.
In addition to Portola’s varsity teams going 3-0, the Portola girls’ junior varsity team also won all three of its games, giving Portola the championship in three of the four divisions.
Boys’ varsity
Portola opened with a 58-47 win over Modoc Thursday night. The following day, the Tigers posted a 67-48 victory over Quincy, and closed with a 55-9 drumming of Loyalton last Saturday.
Is it legal to hunt surf scoters?
Q: I would like to hunt sea ducks and target surf scoters this waterfowl season. Is this legal? If so, how does one know where it is legal to hunt from shore? Also, if hunting from a boat, I know the motor must not be utilized except to retrieve birds. What other guidelines are there for hunting from a boat? A. Surf scoters and other sea ducks are found along the entire coast but hunting for them is more popular north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Northern California (such as Humboldt Bay) and in Oregon and Washington.
