Drinking water notice
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
January 2010
The Plumas Eureka Community Services District Domestic Water System Has Levels of Arsenic Above the Federal Drinking Water Standard
Our domestic water system recently violated the new federal drinking water standard for arsenic. Although this is not an emergency, you have the right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.
What happened?
The USEPA standard, enacted in January 2006, lowered the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of arsenic from 0.050 milligrams per liter (mg/l) to 0.010 mg/l. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants throughout the year. Our results indicate the 2009 fourth quarter average (Oct, Nov, Dec) for Well #2 is 0.013 mg/l, which is above the current federal standard.
What should I do?
You do not need to use an alternative water supply (e.g., bottled water).
This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing arsenic in excess of the MCL over many years may experience skin damage or circulatory system problems, and may have an increased risk to getting cancer.
If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor.
What is being done?
Plumas Eureka CSD and ECO:LOGIC Engineering submitted a preliminary engineering report in June 2009 to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) which evaluates many options for getting the arsenic levels in our drinking water below the Federal Standard.  PECSD has not received any comments from CDPH regarding the report. PECSD is continuing to work with Plumas GeoHydrology in sampling the surrounding groundwater and surface water sources which will help to identify the best possible area to drill a new drinking water well.
Please feel free to contact me at 836-4113 if you have any questions or need further information.
Respectfully,
Frank Motzkus
