Community appreciation lets Steve Tolen be on the receiving end for a change

Steve Tolen is faced with the toughest battle of his life. Diagnosed with prostate cancer the summer of 2010, he underwent surgery in September 2010. Now the cancer has metastasized to his bones.

When he woke up after surgery, his friend Shawn Webb was one of many by his bedside. Webb had been battling brain cancer for over a year, but was there to support Tolen despite it. Sadly, Webb lost his battle in February 2011.

Fly-in continues 30-year tradition

The Rotary Club of Portola hosts its annual Fly-In Pancake Breakfast Sunday, Sept. 9, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Nervino Airport in Beckwourth.

This is the club’s largest fundraiser of the year, with proceeds going toward college and leadership scholarships and Rotary meeting hall maintenance.

Chester board appoints one of its own as interim fire chief

The Chester Public Utility District posted a special meeting notice for Tuesday, Aug. 21. The sole purpose of the meeting was to appoint an interim fire chief.

Upon calling the meeting to order, board members Tonu Plakk, Gregg Scott, Dick Withrow, Ben Thompson and John Knopp went into closed session.

Dogs and owners head for school

The Central Plumas Recreation and Park District will offer a basic dog obedience class this fall. The class, led by Karen Gimbel of Meadow Valley, begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, and continues each Thursday through Oct. 11, according to district general manager Jim Boland.

“We are very fortunate, once again, to have an instructor of Ms. Gimbel’s stature to lead our dog obedience class. She’s extremely knowledgeable,” Boland said.
