These are a few of the stories you will find in this week's printed newspaper:

  • Townhalls attract crowds: Assemblyman Brian Dahle and Sen. Ted Gaines met with constituents in Quincy and Chester during a three-meeting swing through Plumas and Lassen counties.
  • New leader: After nearly three decades, the Plumas County Mental Health Commission has a new leader. Supervisor Kevin Goss was named to replace Hank Eisenmann.
  • Home away from home: As of last week, new homes had been found for all of the patients at Quincy Nursing & Rehabilitation and most had already moved.

The Happy Happy Joy Joy Family Band members played their young hearts out to a packed crowd Dec. 27, 2012, at the Town Hall Theatre in Quincy.

The spirited performances from this talented group of local musicians in their late teens and early 20s ran the gamut from bluegrass and folk to original compositions, pop rock, rap, poetry/comedy, standards and jazz.

Photographer Graham Shea said of the group, “Even as familiar as I am with the talent of all of them, I was blown away by what they put together and how professionally they pulled off a successful concert.

Carolyn Carter

The winter is upon us, and with it, we don our snow boots and puffy jackets, we turn up our heaters and put chains on our tires. And many of us head out to the Plumas-Eureka Ski Bowl above Johnsville to watch the annual Historic Longboard Revival Races.

Judges sought for student business plan contest

A third of the American workforce is comprised of freelancers, according to Sara Horowitz, founder of the Freelancers Union.

Many of those are entrepreneurs.      “Entrepreneurs are innovators who use a process of shattering the status quo of the existing products and services to set up new products, new services,” said Joseph Alois Schumpeter, Austrian-American economist and political scientist, back in 1934.

Local photographer's artwork on display at MacWorld

Graeagle resident Michael Clawson creates unique photos using his iPhone. This photo, “On Other Worlds, Deer Roam Free,” was selected for the Macworld/iWorld 2013 Digital Art Gallery. Clawson snapped the image of the deer near the Graeagle Frost-tee, using the High Dynamic Range setting. It allowed him to capture two images, one image for highlights and one image for shadows, and then merge them together for a more dynamic photo. He then imported that photo into an iPhone program called LensLight, which allows for lighting effects and overlays — in this case, an image of Saturn. He made the final adjustments in an iOS program called Snapseed, and voilá, Saturn is looming over Graeagle deer. Clawson will be speaking at Macworld about creative iPhone photo editing Feb. 2 in San Francisco. Photo by Michael Clawson
