Oels takes oath at council meeting

The April 11 Portola City Council meeting began with one vacant seat — the one reserved for Councilman Dan Wilson.

His absence didn’t go unnoticed as fellow Councilman Bill Weaver questioned his whereabouts, noting that it was Wilson’s job to be there. But Wilson wouldn’t have stayed in his seat for long.

Following the public comment portion of the meeting, the consent calendar and election results certification, Phil Oels took the oath of office. Wilson’s nameplate was removed and Oels took his seat on the dais.

Portola votes to recall Wilson

Portola voters recalled Councilman Dan Wilson with a vote of 242 to 235. The votes were tallied during a recount this afternoon.

Retired logger Phil Oels will replace Wilson and will be sworn into office at tonight’s city council meeting. Oels garnered 180 votes, while John Gault received 95 votes and Mike Rush, 51, on the recall ballot.

School closure committee finalizes recommendation

The Chester area District Advisory, “7-11” or School Closure Committee, met for its last regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday, April 4, in the cafeteria at Chester Junior-Senior High School. The meeting was called for two purposes: to give the public its first look at the draft recommendation created by the committee, and give that same public the ability to comment on the recommendation.
