  • A second chance: The new Day Reporting Center in Quincy held a grand opening that featured a recognition ceremony to honor achievements of people in the Alternative Sentencing Program.
  • Classrooms closed: Just days before classes were to begin, Quincy Elementary School staff were packing up classrooms in one wing of the structure because a roof needed to be replaced.
  • Body of missing man found: A search for missing Feather River College alumnus Lucius Robbi ended in Idaho with the discovery of his body and car. He was believed to have died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash.

Teacher layoff issue dominates school board meeting

How Plumas Unified School District and the Plumas County Office of Education will handle teacher layoffs was a top topic of discussion at the school board meeting March 15.

Bruce Williams, in his role as director of Human Resources, led off the discussion with a handout that walked through the district’s process, frequently asked questions, applicable parts of the education code and the district’s contract with the Plumas County Teachers Association.

The hunt for Railroad Days volunteers continues

Service organizations and businesses in Eastern Plumas County were invited to an early morning meeting March 8 at Jimmie’s Roadhouse 70 to discuss the future of Railroad Days.

Seventeen individuals showed up to indicate their interest and enthusiasm in retaining the yearly Portola event. Although the city of Portola has decreased its financial support for this year and can no longer underwrite the man-hours they have contributed in the past to set up and clean up, city representatives were on hand to show that they were still willing to help.

County approves agreement for Lake Front development

When people start buying new houses again, the developer of a master-planned community on Lake Almanor want to be ready to sell them.

On Tuesday, March 13, the Plumas County Board of Supervisors approved a development agreement with Lake Almanor Associates LP for a future community on the Lake Almanor Peninsula.

School 7-11 committees get more time

After listening to the 7-11 committees’ pleas for additional time, the school board extended its deadlines. The committees now have until April 20 to submit their budgetary recommendations to the school district. The recommendations will then be presented in a board workshop May 2.

During the board’s March 8 meeting, committee representatives said they needed more time because they didn’t have all of the information necessary to make informed recommendations.

Eureka! Local group strikes deal to keep state park open

Plumas-Eureka State Park will be open this summer with a full range of services thanks to an agreement between the Plumas Eureka State Park Association and the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

“We’re very excited,” said Jay Skutt, president of the park association. “It’s good for the community. To see the park sit there and not be used would be a tragedy.”
