   These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Image makeover needed: In the soon-to-be-released grand jury report, the jurors said the county’s Alcohol and Drug and Mental Health departments are suffering from a poor public image.
  • Help at the jail: The Board of Supervisors approved the sheriff’s request to hire four corrections officers, but not before reminding him the county is facing a $3 million budget problem.
  • Water disaster?: The state has already enacted emergency conservation measures. The county is thinking about declaring a local disaster as well.

Feather River College seeking cash flow help

Feather River College's Sept. 16 board meeting continued to focus on cash flow problems caused by the state of California's failure to pass a budget.

Chief Financial Officer Jim Scoubes asked the board to authorize him to secure a loan from Umpqua Bank. That request followed on the board's loan request to Plumas County for nearly $5 million as an advance on the college's tax revenue.

Musician draws inspiration from Plumas County landscape

Bennett Jackson is a consummate musician. He's a technically proficient songwriter and guitarist, a thoughtful lyricist, and he's educated in the country music canon.

In addition, he's intelligent and articulate in his understanding of country music and its importance in the American musical landscape.

Audit findings

"Our operational review did not identify any major issues or concerns related to the efficiency or effectiveness of either company's franchised operations. Our review leads us to conclude that the county is being well served by both of its franchise haulers."

Emergency Road Closure - Sloat Railroad Crossing

A temporary road closure is being made for emergency reconstruction of the Sloat railroad crossing. A total closure will occur from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Monday, 27 Sept. 2010.

A single lane is expected to be open by 11:00 am.

Complete opening of the road should occur by 3:00 pm
