Marijuana growers convicted on gun and drug charges

    United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that late Friday afternoon a federal jury convicted defendants Jose Alfredo Zepeda, 20, of East Palo Alto, and Clemente Ferrias Arroyo, 63, of Morgan Hill, of conspiring to manufacture at least 1,000 marijuana plants, manufacturing at least 1,000 marijuana plants, and possessing of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking crimes.

Plumas Audubon to host Biodiversity Days

   Plumas Audubon Society hosts the third annual Biodiversity Days throughout May. Events include art exhibits, workshops, tours and speakers.

    The Plumas Audubon Society mission is “to promote understanding, appreciation and protection of the biodiversity of the Feather River region through education, research, and the restoration and conservation of natural ecosystems.

Chester Elementary wins California Distinguished School Award

    “April 15 – 16 were monumental dates for Chester Elementary School and for 483 other elementary schools that received a telephone call from California State Superintendent of Education Jack O’Connell,” said Chester Elementary School Principal Sally McGowan.

Schools open Wednesday and on schedule

All schools in the Plumas Unified School District are open Wednesday and starting on schedule, the only chain requirement at this time is east of the Portola area which received about four inches of snow overnight.

Persistent snow showers west of Highway 395 and along and south of Highway 44 have created snow covered roads, especially along Highway 89 south of Graeagle and for Highway 44 west of Susanville. Snow on roads is expected to melt by mid to late morning as strong late April sun warms the road surfaces above freezing.
