Protest at high noon
Protesters and bright neon signs turn Presidents Day in Chester into a colorful day despite the gray skies. While it was obvious many of the participants were objecting to the threat of school closures, a new message, “Recall Harris,” took center stage. Chanting “Save our schools” were individuals of every generation — there to show support for all Plumas County schools, local businesses and healthy communities. The noise impact increased dramatically when those passing by in cars showed support for the protest by honking and waving. While the signs held a variety of messages, two in particular were standouts: “We Stand United Against PUSD” and “Rest in Peace Plumas County — No School — No People — No Business, Recall Harris.” In addition to advocating for more time for the 7-11 committees to form their recommendations, Guy McNett, an Indian Valley senior resident, offered a unique perspective when he said, “My daughter went to school in Indian Valley 25 years ago. We need young families, we don’t want to just look around and see faces our age.” Photo by M. Kate West
