Portola mayor dies

City of Portola Mayor John Larrieu passed away the evening of Tuesday, June 20. City Manager Robert Meacher said, “John will be missed by many friends, family, and colleagues. Through his many years of public service, he was a well respected city leader, teacher, and friend.” See next week’s edition of the newspaper for more about Larrieu’s life.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to John’s family and friends. He was a very special man and memories of the great music performances at the high school have stayed all these years. He touched the hearts of many.

One of my favorite teachers! As a youth I was very impressed with him. His knowledge and kindness he shared with all of us will always be remembered. Heaven just received a great music teacher and person!

Thoughts and prayers to the Larrieu family. Many happy memories of musical jam sessions with my grandma and grandpa Tejeda. The best music teacher that shared so much passion and dedication to generations of Portola High students. He will be truly missed. Play your bass in heaven Mr. Larrieu!

John not only taught our children he loved them. I will forever be grateful for the example of what a good and caring person should look like. My family was blessed by John’s example and involvement in our lives. We still remark, every time we travel, “You bring it, you carry it!”

Some of my VERY best memories in high school were because of Mr. Larrieu and the culture he created in Show Choir. I had the wonderful opportunity to participate all 4 years and not only learned a ton from him, but hsd done amazing experiences. What a gift he gave to our community through music. My thoughts and prayers are with his family…

We were so sad to hear of John’s passing. He and his family were some of the best neighbors we ever had, and John was perpetually thoughtful and funny. He will be sorely missed both in the community and among those of us who have dispersed elsewhere from Portola. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ida and the family.
