Madeline Williams of Chilcoot received her crown as the winner of this year’s Sweetheart of the Mountains Scholarship Competition in front of a sold out crowd at Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds June 15.
Along with her two competitors, Hanna Wearin of Portola and Claire Coelho of Quincy, Williams competed in the categories of fundraising, talent and poise. Coelho was named first runner up.
“I was really nervous; it was a tough competition,” said Williams, “but I am really glad I walked through my fear.” The competition took place interspersed between a dance performance by the talents of Rhythm & Grace Dance Studio, Kristina’s Gymnastics, dramaworks and Quincy Star Follies.
“The Sweetheart of the Mountains has been a reoccurring event in Sierra and Plumas counties since the 1940s,” said Fair Manager John Steffanic. “Sweetheart” winner Nancy Gambell assisted on and offstage with the 2017 competition. She continues her involvement with the evolving scholarship competition, pumping new life into it each year.
