75 YEARS AGO.....1939

Commemorating the second anniversary of the opening of the Feather River Highway, the 3rd annual Portola Rodeo will be held Sunday. On Saturday, Dollar Days and Value Round-Up Days will be held in Portola with the merchants cooperating with the chamber of commerce offering prizes and free movies at the theater downtown.

50 YEARS AGO.....1964
The last half of our in-house bound newspaper volumes in our archives for the year 1964 (August through December) is missing and those historical news items are not available to include in the remainder of this year’s Remember When column.

25 YEARS AGO.....1989
Plumas County Goes Hollywood — Shooting is scheduled to begin on a horror movie to be filmed in Plumas County. The movie will mostly be filmed in the Gold Lake area but a few shots will be filmed at Pioneer Pool which will be converted to a murky pond and a picnic scene at Gansner park, both in Quincy.

10 YEARS AGO.....2004
Reginald Valencia has been hired as the new Plumas County chief probation officer, replacing Tom Frady who retired earlier this month.

Lifelong Portola resident Ray Donnenwirth was the grand marshal of the Portola Railroad Days parade last weekend. He grew up in Portola, graduated from Portola High School in 1950, later taught and coached sports at Portola High School and was vice principal there for 20 years.

Note: items included in the weekly Remember When column are taken from our bound newspaper archives and represent writing styles of that particular period. The spelling and grammar are not edited, so the copy is presented as it actually appeared in the original newspaper.
