75 YEARS AGO.....1939

The stock of J.R. Long grocery store in Greenville was damaged to the extent of several thousand dollars when fire started in the waste material located in the rear of the store Monday evening. A nearby house was also damaged.

Commemorating the second anniversary of the opening of the Feather River Highway, the 3rd annual Portola Rodeo will be held Sunday. On Saturday, Dollar Days and Value Round-Up Days will be held in Portola with the merchants cooperating with the chamber of commerce offering prizes and free movies at the theater downtown.

A second blow was dealt to the Feather River Lumber Company this week. Last week, 6 million feet of dry lumber was destroyed by fire at the company’s plant at Delleker and on Monday of this week, fire broke out in the logging area on Nelson Point Road, damaging 300 acres of standing timber and 600,000 board feet of logs down and ready to haul.

75 YEARS AGO.....1939

A sufficient water supply to enable the ore mill at Standart Mine in Indian Valley to operate 24 hours daily was assured this week by the completion of a supply line from Round Lake Reservoir. The pipeline will deliver up to 250 gallons of water per minute.

The ranchers of Sierra Valley will be well prepared if the Mormon cricket grasshopper pests invades that section again next year. A carload of bran to be mixed with a poison mixture will be used if needed next summer.
