75 YEARS AGO.....1939

Terrific savings on Christmas dinner foods advertised at local grocery stores: ham, 26 cents a pound; pork roast, 15 cents a pound; canned cranberry sauce, 10 cents a can; fresh cranberries, 13 cents a pound; celery, 13 cents a bunch; cauliflower, 13 cents a head; canned pumpkin, 3 cans for 25 cents.

This Christmas season Quincy entered the claim of having the tallest outdoor Christmas tree in California. It is a 200 ft. Douglas Fir with 300 colored globes. It stands at the top of Radio Hill in view of most of American Valley.

The weekend storm brought much needed precipitation to a parched California and Plumas County. The storm caused a shut down of local mills and logging operations, which had seen an exceptionally long season attributable to favorable fall weather conditions.

A Portola community Christmas tree will be placed and displayed at the intersection of Commercial and California streets and will be lighted this weekend.
    

Three new polling places have been added to Plumas County’s other thirty existing precincts. Portola will now have a total of five precincts instead of three and Quincy will add one additional precinct.

Advertised Thanksgiving grocery items featured in Plumas County markets this week: Tom turkeys, 22 cents a pound; fresh cranberries, 18 cents a pound; plum pudding, 35 cents a tin; mincemeat, 25 cents a jar; 10 pounds of sugar, 58 cents a sack; pumpkin, 11 cents a large can; potatoes for mashing, 13 cents for a 10 pound sack; celery, 7 cents a bunch.
