75 YEARS AGO.....1939

Four California newspapermen became honorary members of Sigma Delta Chi, the national professional journalistic society at Stanford University Friday night. Among them was M.F. Small, publisher of the Feather River Bulletin.

A low bid of $191,062 has been awarded for the construction of the Almanor Forest Highway between Paxton and Crescent Mills.

75 YEARS AGO.....1939

The magazine “Life”, which every week features on its front cover the picture of some famed person, this week gave the spotlight to a Plumas County girl when they featured Alice Marble, winner of the Wightman Cup for tennis at last week's women's tennis match at Forest Hills, New York. Alice was born September 28, 1913 near Beckwourth on the ranch now known as Marble Hot Springs. She moved with her family to San Francisco when she was five.

A new American flag was ordered this week by Plumas County for display at the Plumas County Courthouse when the ragged condition of the old flag was brought to the attention of the Board of Supervisors.

The stock of J.R. Long grocery store in Greenville was damaged to the extent of several thousand dollars when fire started in the waste material located in the rear of the store Monday evening. A nearby house was also damaged.

Commemorating the second anniversary of the opening of the Feather River Highway, the 3rd annual Portola Rodeo will be held Sunday. On Saturday, Dollar Days and Value Round-Up Days will be held in Portola with the merchants cooperating with the chamber of commerce offering prizes and free movies at the theater downtown.
