Athletes play it smart

Feather River College soccer and volleyball teams were honored Feb. 8 for their collective academic achievements as a team.

Head soccer coach Don Williams and Athletic Director Merle Trueblood handed out certificates and congratulations to members of the FRC soccer team that includes multiple international students. The Eagles scored big with a 10-0-2 record in conference play for 2016 while they were also excelling in the classroom.

The 23-member soccer team, , were honored for a cumulative grade point average of 3.16.

Head volleyball coach Sarah Ritchie called out her highly accomplished scholastic team members. They received certificates and recognition from the crowd of FRC sports fans for their hard work in their studies as well as on the court. Lady Eagles were 9-1 in conference play last season while keeping up their grades.

The volleyball team, 17 members, was honored for a cumulative grade point average of 3.44.

FRC has a history of academic excellence from their many athletic team students. Out of 112 community colleges, Feather River has received Scholar Team Awards for volleyball in 2010, 2013 and 2015. Baseball received the team award in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2014 and 2015.

FRC has been the alma mater of the Scholar Athlete of the Year three times. Most recently, baseball player Kody Kuhlaman in 2014 and baseball player Johathon Troop in 2002. Yvonne Goodson, who participated in volleyball and basketball, was honored in 1996.
