Be Firewise on Wildfire Preparedness Day
Hosted by Chester Fire, the Chester Firewise Committee invites Chester residents to join the Wildfire Community Preparedness Day event scheduled Saturday, May 4.
Learn how to create a defensible space around your home to help avoid a tragedy like the one in the town of Paradise this past year, when a fire swept through the community unexpectedly and extremely rapidly, destroying thousands of homes and taking the life of at least 83 people.
“We are going to show how to create defensible space at two different sites in Chester,” noted Karen Lichti, Firewise Committee member and CFD public information officer, adding that this is a hands on effort with important instructions and guidelines provided on protecting your property should a wildland fire make its way to your home.
Lichti said participants should meet at 9 a.m. in front of the CPUD office at 251 Chester Airport Road. She will take a few minutes to go over what will be happening, and then everyone attending will follow her to two home sites in Chester.
“Please join us for a few hours of fun learning,” said Lichti. Afterwards participants will be rewarded for their time with a free lunch at Chester Park around 12:30 p.m. Be sure to RSVP the Firewise Committee at 228-9611 so they have a good count for lunch.
Lichti also asks that those volunteering to help should bring gloves, rakes, pruners, etc.
“Even if you cannot join up with us, please work on creating a defensible space around your property” by contacting CFD for information and free handouts at 258-3456. “Help Chester become more Firewise.”
