Betty Rodrigues

Betty was born in Little Rock, Arkansas January 16, 1944. Betty and her family moved from Arkansas to Berkeley, California, when she was two. They later moved to San Leandro where she attended San Leandro High School and graduated in 1961. She loved dancing and taught at a local Arthur Murray Dance Studio. Betty attended Chabot College in San Leandro and worked for International Harvester in San Leandro.

She and, her husband Doug lived in Camarillo, California, for 10 years from 1968-1978, where she worked for Hal Watkins Chevrolet and later as a legal secretary. She and Doug returned to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1978, living in Fremont until 1997. She and Doug built there home in Clio, California, in 1997 and started High Sierra Animal Rescue in May of 1999. It was Betty’s idea to work with a local dog trainer to put a plan together to start an animal rescue in Plumas County to stop the unnecessary killing of 500 adoptable cats and dogs each year! The organization, working with PAWS in Quincy and PCAS, has supported a no-kill community in Plumas County to this day.

Anyone who ever met Betty would recall her friendly personality and kind demeanor. She would take a personal interest in everyone she was with, always asking questions about what was going on in their lives. Doug thought it would be important for everyone to know some of Betty’s favorite things. Her favorite flower was yellow roses, her favorite color was purple, her favorite song was “Louie Louie” by the Kingsmen and her favorite pastime was doing New York Times Crossword Puzzles.

Betty passed peacefully at home in Clio, California, on November 9, 2021.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Doug Rodrigues and her brother,
Wayne Morris and sister in law, Kathy Morris and brother in law, Robert Rodrigues. Also, her nieces and nephews, Amanda, Jess, Eric, Dave and Dan.
