Blood drive in Portola this Friday, June 16

The Eastern Plumas Health Care Auxiliary is hosting a blood drive on Friday, June 16 in Portola, at the Catholic Community Hall, 100 S. Pine Street. The event will run from noon to 6 p.m. The Auxiliary has hosted these events for several years.  This event is through Vitalant of Reno, Nevada.

The aftermath of the pandemic continues to impact the national blood supply and put patients at risk. More than 2,000 blood drive partners have suspended drives for more than a year as they adjust to post-pandemic life. In fact, blood donations have dropped about 20% since 2019. One of the most noticeable – and reversable – changes to the national blood supply is that far fewer blood drives are being hosted in 2023 than 2019.

On donation day,

  • Bring your ID.
  • Eat a healthy, low-fat meal within two hours ahead of your donation.
  • Drink 8 to 16 ounces of water or a sports drink.
  • The day before you donate, have a snack or a meal that’s on the salty side, like salted nuts or a can of soup. When you donate blood, you lose about a gram of salt. Replacing some of that salt ahead of time helps keep your blood pressure normal and can improve your donation experience.

Please join us and make a donation, or if you are unable to donate, please share this information with others. Appointments are preferred, although some walk-ins may be available. To schedule an appointment, go online to Donors.Vitalant.Org and search Blood Drive Code: Portola.  For assistance, please call Vitalant of Reno, 775.258.4825.
