Blood drive is a success

“I’ve never won anything!” That was what longtime Quincy blood donor Penny Lambach shouted excitedly when she learned she had won two tickets to the Reno Rodeo in a drawing sponsored by Vitalant at last week’s community blood drive.

Lambach was the big winner at the June 4 drive, sponsored by the Plumas Hospital Volunteers, but all donors received coupons for a free sandwich and drink at Port-of-Sub restaurants.

“Actually, the big winners were the 197 hospital patients our donors helped by giving a total of 75 units of blood,” said local blood drive coordinator Susan Christensen. “That’s pretty amazing for a small community like ours.”

The drive drew both regular and new donors, young donors and older ones, long-time residents and new-to-Quincy donors, Christensen noted.

PDH Volunteer President Sam Pence was joined by fellow volunteers Carla Hamilton, Nancy Andrews, Joanne Kibbe, Eldora Duniphan, and Eileen and Frank Reinhart at the donor check-in desk. Other PDH volunteers made reminder calls the night before and provided treats for post-donation noshing.

The next community blood drive will be held Tuesday, Sept. 10, from noon to 6 p.m. Donors can call Christensen at 283-2424 to sign up, or they can go online at www.bloodhero.com and make their own appointment by entering the code QUINCY.
