The Eastern Plumas Health Care Auxiliary is hosting the June 17 blood drive in Portola, at the Catholic Community Hall, at 100 S. Pine Street in Portola. The event will run from noon to 6 p.m. The Auxiliary has hosted these events for several years. This event is through Vitalent of Reno, Nevada.
There is currently a critical blood shortage. This summer’s blood drive will help ensure patients can continue to receive the treatment they need during a time when donations are down. Several thousand fewer donations are given each summer on average compared to the rest of the year.
On donation day,
- Bring your ID.
- Eat a healthy, low-fat meal within two hours ahead of your donation.
- Drink 8 to 16 ounces of water or a sports drink.
- The day before you donate, have a snack or a meal that’s on the salty side, like salted nuts or a can of soup. When you donate blood, you lose about a gram of salt. Replacing some of that salt ahead of time helps keep your blood pressure normal and can improve your donation experience.
