Body of man missing since Jan. 17 found by Search and Rescue

          James Thornton

James Thornton, 52, was last seen Jan. 17 and reported missing by his family Feb. 7. Yesterday, Feb. 20, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office reported that after an extensive search of Keddie Ridge, Thornton’s body was located. His body was discovered after Search and Rescue located some personal items of Thornton in the area a few days prior and began to focus heavily there.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The case is under investigation.

According to a family member, Thornton was last known to be with his broken down vehicle somewhere along Highway 89 near Canyon Dam and was possibly on his way to the Portola area.

The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the Thornton family and thanks the CHP Northern Air Division, the California Rescue Dog Association and its own Search and Rescue personnel for their efforts.
