After a few hundred yards the runners start to spread out of the starting pack. Serious runners tend to be wearing “running attire” while the strollers are pacing themselves. The banana crew are just trying not to slip on themselves. Photos by Gregg Scott

Can running be fun? It can at the Chester Fun Run

An early morning spectator asked “Can running really be fun?” Well, If the 400 plus registrants that signed up for the 42nd annual  4th of July Fun Run are any indication, then the answer is a resounding YES! This is not just a crowd of people running a mile for fun. It is a combination of fashion, outrageous costumes, madcap zaniness, senior, middle-aged, juvenile, toddler and infant introduction to fitness and warmhearted competition ever designed by humankind.  Sponsored by the Almanor Recreation and Park District, the runners know the first 400 registrants will be amply rewarded with a commemorative T-shirt and the knowledge that they have been part of a very unique group of people.

It’s very possible that the big group that is holding back is because they don’t want to get tot close to the gorilla. The dad with the stroller is definitely keeping an eye on him and the retriever looks pretty calm, but ready to react.
This group looks pretty normal, although they do appear to be slowing down. Come on kids, you can pass those older runners.
