Lawrence Torres III, 23, of Delano, CA, was driving his 2018 Chevrolet Malibu westbound on Highway 70, east of the Tobin Bridge at 7:05 p.m. on Aug. 29.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Torres was traveling at an unsafe speed for roadway conditions and was unable to safely negotiate a left hand curve in the roadway and he lost control of the vehicle. The Malibu traveled to the right onto the north gravel shoulder and then collided with a metal guardrail. Torres allowed his vehicle to travel to the left across both the westbound and eastbound lanes, where the Malibu collided with a metal guardrail on the south shoulder of Highway 70. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels facing in a southwesterly direction within the eastbound lane of the highway at the Tobin Bridge.
Torres received minor injuries and was transported to Enloe Medical Center for treatment. According to the CHP, Torres was wearing his lap and shoulder harness and was not using a cellphone.
