Feather River College rodeo men score top honors
Feather River College Eagle wranglers competed in the first event of 2020 in Fresno on March 6 and 7, and boy what a showing they had.
As a team, the Eagle men tied first place with the hosting California State University-Fresno team.
The two top men’s team totals were 700 points. West Hills College came in second with 570, Cal Poly State University-San Luis Obispo earned third with 400 points and Lassen came in next with 200 points. Nearby Cuesta College men earned a meager 120.
However, the Cuesta women took first place as a team with 295 points. FRC women did not place. University of Nevada-Las Vegas earned second with 165 and Fresno pulled in third with 150. Cal Poly had 115, Lassen 50 and West Hills College just 20 points.
“Our women’s team is very young and has shown some great promise, but haven’t had the success this year we have hoped for, but are optimistic about the coming spring,” said FRC head rodeo coach and FRC rodeo team alumni Riley York.
Cody Moncrief Stewart earned third place in the Men’s All-around with 260 points. Fresno rider Cole Dodds took first and Stanley Joseph from West Hills came in second. FRC’s Lane Oland Wheeler took fourth place behind Stewart.
“Our men’s team held onto their lead from the fall with our first rodeo of the spring. The first round the boys had a great rodeo,” said coach York.
The Eagles had the number one steer wrestler on their team, Garrett Shell capturing FRC first place honors. Cal Poly had the second, third and fourth place wranglers. Lassen tied with Cal Poly for fourth followed by FRC’s Cody Stewart.
“We sent four students to the championship round in the team roping,” said Coach York. “Lane Wheeler ended up placing second in the average, and Davis Mardesich and Bryar Byrne finished in sixth place.”
Stewart finished third in Tie Down Roping Heeler with a time/score of 23.3 seconds. Lane Wheeler took third with 16.3. In theTeam Roping Header contest Davis Michael Mardesich held sixth place with a 7.2.
“Overall the men’s team tied for first with Fresno State as a team. We are half way through the season, still holding onto first in the region by 450 points ahead of Fresno,” noted Coach York.
