Fifth annual Paws on Parade: Helping homeless pets

High Sierra Animal Rescue (HSAR) is hosting the fifth annual Paws on Parade on Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the park in Graeagle. This family and dog-friendly fundraiser includes many activities for kids, adults and dogs.

The event is free and features the famous Retriever’s Ball, dog agility and training demonstrations, Hot Rod Hounds Flyball, and a drawing with prizes donated by local merchants.

HSAR is hosting several booths with volunteer information, adoptable dogs, and selling specialty retail products such as natural pet remedies and sturdy leashes and collars.

All proceeds from the event support HSAR’s work in the community.

A number of vendor booths featuring artists, community groups, pet services and pet-related products will also be at the festival, as well as food and beverages by Crowe’s Cottage Foods, music by Lance Barker, and free dog nail trims by Marlee and Friends Dog Grooming.

Other activities include a dog costume contest, face painting, dog musical chairs, a dog scavenger hunt, and more interactive fun for people and their dogs.

The Retriever’s Ball is a drawing where numbered balls are released into the Mill Pond and HSAR alumni dog Scout is sent in to retrieve the winning balls. Prizes were donated by local businesses and include golf for four at Grizzly Ranch Golf Course, a one-night stay at Chalet View Lodge, a dinner package from Gray Eagle Lodge, $150 gift certificates from Sportsman’s Warehouse and a massage certificate from Mountain High Massage. Balls are on sale now at HSAR or can be purchased on the day of the event.

Hot Rod Hounds Flyball from Reno will entertain the crowds throughout the day with several demonstrations and races. Flyball is a fast-paced dog relay race featuring hurdles, flying tennis balls, and racing dogs. The public can watch the races, or they can receive training on the course with their own dogs.

An agility course will be set up with agility and trick dog training demonstrations throughout the day. Crowds will be amazed by the dogs’ skillful run of the course and can learn some tips and tricks for working with their own dogs at home.

Paws on Parade is a fun community event for the entire family, and a great way to show your support for HSAR ‘s rescue work. HSAR is a no-kill rescue dedicated to saving homeless pets and advancing pet welfare.

This year marks their 20th year saving lives in the region, and since their inception they have placed over 4,500 homeless pets into loving homes. The rescue is funded solely through donations, a monthly giving program and fundraising events.

As expenses continue to rise and the number of neglected or abandoned animals continues to grow, HSAR needs the public’s support to continue this community service.

The event’s major sponsors are Gumba’s Family Pizza and the Brewing Lair, both in Blairsden, as well as Watson Companies from Sacramento.
