It is with heavy hearts that today, May 26, 2022, we announce the passing of Gerald Austin Knox (Jerry), son of the late Everett and Clara (DeLong) Knox. Jerry was born the third of six children on June 28, 1927, in San Rafael, California.
He attended school in Portola, California, joined the United States Coast Guard at 17 years old and served in the Pacific theater during World War II. He traveled on Merchant Marine ships as a Seaman Second Class and regaled his children, grandchildren and friends with his adventures in the Philippines, Italy and other ports around the world. Upon returning to Portola after his military service, he married Bonnie Lee Friend and had 3 three children: Jerry Lee, Kenneth Wayne and April Jean. Jerry and Bonnie were married for 70 years before her passing in 2015.
As a young man Jerry worked as a logger with his brother Norman, as well as a lineman for Sierra Pacific. He later built up his own real estate and development business, Knox Real Estate, that thrived throughout Plumas County and beyond. He eventually retired to Dobbins, California where to this day his family loves to gather for holidays and reunions.
Jerry was a larger-than-life character to his family and friends. He loved to hunt and fish, tell stories about his adventures and escapades and pass on his lifelong learnings. He was always quick with a joke, ready to lend a hand to family and friends in need and would “buy a steak for anyone that was down on his luck and needed a meal.”
Jerry is survived by his 3 children, 9 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren that will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie, all 6 of his brothers and sisters and 1 grandchild.
Upon his request there will be no services. Jerry’s family will be spreading his ashes in a place where he loved and spent countless hours hunting and roaming.
