Bucks Lake offers plenty of good fishing over the holiday weekend. The roads are clear and with a little caution for ice, fishermen can enjoy a full day on the lake fishing. The lodge is open on weekends. Photo by Mari Erin Roth

Lake level has increased fractionally since last week’s report. The algal bloom continues despite 45 to 47-degree water temps. Visibility is between 5-10’. The weather this week has been fantastic and another seven days of the same is in the forecast. There is no change on boat launching with both USFS public ramps closed, Plumas Pines is still allowing launching at their facility.
Fishing was good this past week with an even mix of Browns and Bows being caught. “We continue to slow troll, I did see a couple of boats fast trolling and they were picking up fish as well,” said John Crotty of Almanor Fishing Association. “Choose your preferred method and stick with it, as always look for large concentrations of pond smelt to find fish.”
Shore fishing was also good this past week; the Canyon Dam area and Hamilton Branch are the best shots at quality fish. Mark of Sierra Fly & Tackle shop at the Hamilton Branch Bridge is willing to show folks how to get to the water and get set up with fly’s or bait. There are no changes to road conditions. Expect minor delays on Highways 36 and 89. There is no estimated opening date for highway 70 through the canyon.
