Greenville music fest highlights student performances

Greenville High School is hosting a music festival today, March 11, with student musicians from schools throughout the region performing. Musical host is Jim Norman from Greenville High School.

The festival couldn’t have happened without the efforts of California Music Educators Association; Plumas Unified School District Superintendent Terry Oestreich; Traci Cockerill; GHS teacher Theresa Belsher-Howe; PUSD transportation staff Pam Keller, Colleen Heard, Judy Dolphin and Benjamin McGinley; and festival directors Benjamin Wade, Lassen High School; Siobhan Markee, Quincy High School; Emily Haverm, Portola High School; Johnene McDonald, Face the Music Studio; and Norman.

Judging will be provided by ajudicators Martha O’Neill, Truckee Meadows Junior College; and Sue Delgardo, retired from Chico Unified School District.

The musical program begins at 8:45 a.m. with the Greenville High School Band, Jim Norman, director, performing  “Aztec Celebration” by David Shaffer; “Nomadic Adventure,” Steve Hodges; and untitled, by Jim Norman.

At 9:15 a.m., Raven Claw Children’s String Orchestra, Johnene McDonald, director and accompanist, performs A Medley of Folk Tunes — “The Ashgrove,” “Foggy Dew” and “Swallow Tail Jig”; “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”/”William Tell Overture”; two traditional folk tunes: “Star of the County Down” (Irish) and “Elenke” (Bulgarian), with arrangements by McDonald.

Quincy Junior High Band performs beginning 9:45 a.m., Siobhan Markee, director: “Firestorm,” Rob Grice; and “Hymn For Those Who Serve,” “Chesapeake March.”

Lassen High School Choir, Benjamin Wade, director, performs at 10:15 a.m.: “I Lived,” Jacob Narverud; “Lo How a Rose e’re Blooming,” trad. arr. Benjamin Wade; and “Africa,” arr. Roger Emerson.

After a break, Portola High School Band begins at 11 a.m., Emily Haver, director, performing “Athena,” Michael Vertoske; “A Certain Slant of Light,” Peter Terry; and “Excelsior!,” William Owens.

Quincy High School Band, Siobhan Markee, director, starts at 11:30 a.m. Performances include Fugue In G Minor, JS Bach/arr. Tristan McMichael; “Ammerland,” Jacob DeHann; and “The Liberty Bell,” John Philip Souse, arr.

At noon, the Portola High School Choir, Emily Haver, director, performs “Festival Sanctus,” John Leavitt;  “The Stars Are With the Voyager,” Mary Donnelly/George Strid; and “Lightning!,” Greg Gilpen.

Greenville Junior High Band, Norman, director, plays at 12:30 p.m.: “Mary Ann,” Mark Williams; “Cango Caves,” Ralph Ford; and “Firestorm,” Rob Grice.
