Highway 70 open through the Feather River Canyon; but expect up to 90 minute delays

Caltrans announced this evening, Dec. 9,  that both lanes of Highway 70 are currently open to traffic near the Butte/Plumas County Line in the Feather River Canyon.

This area has been closed due to significant slide activity stemming from an atmospheric river event in late October and further activity in mid-November. Caltrans and its contractors have worked tirelessly at the location to provide through-traffic access in the area, with scaling, blasting, and debris removal operations. Pavement and culvert work have also been conducted at the location.

While the route is currently open, motorists are advised to check roadway conditions prior to traveling into the area. The slide location has experienced multiple periods of activity since the initial event and more inclement, winter weather is expected in the coming months. Motorists should also be cognizant of burn scar areas along State Route 70 from the Dixie Fire and possible effects from inclement weather periods.

Dixie Fire emergency work also continues at various locations in the State Route 70 corridor by Caltrans and our contractors, along with permitted work for PG&E, utility companies, and other agencies. Motorists should plan for up to 90-minute delays on SR 70 between Jarbo Gap and Quincy, Mondays-Saturdays during daytime hours, along with minor delays on Sundays. This work and scheduling are weather dependent and subject to change at any time.

Caltrans District 2 thanks the local communities and traveling public for their patience during the slide closure and for their continued patience during post-Dixie Fire emergency efforts. 24/7 roadway conditions are available via QuickMap, and updated district information can be found on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Please contact the District 2 Public Information Office by phone at 530-225-3426 or email with questions.
