Letter to the Editor: About a National Monument

The 1906 Antiquities Act allows the President of the United States to declare an area of important historical and cultural value to be a National Monument. Examples include the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Canyon. Friends of Plumas Wilderness is heading up an effort to declare the Feather River watershed a National Monument.

This would help conserve the lands and waters of our region to build resilience in the face of the destruction caused by the wildfires of the last five years. Those very destructive fires show that we must protect our mountain watershed for future generations to enjoy as much as we have. We owe this to our grandchildren, and National Monument status would be a huge step forward in that effort.
