Letter to the Editor: I Took That Oath

I took the Oath “I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; ….” ( U.S.C.-2011-Title 10 Sec 502). I also, went forth with a target on my chest such that those enemies could find me in their sights. Why do people like me do this? It is because we believe in the values and principles that our country was founded on. It is my belief that there are a lot of loud voices out there that have not served on foreign shores nor do they understand or maybe just don’t remember their experiences or why they did it. Some of us went forth in defense of the liberties of movement and free speech that all peoples of the United States have a right to enjoy. We respect and even defend the freedom of speech of those who have beliefs different from ours. Further, we would like to respectfully request those that have different views from us to respectfully acknowledge our right to freely express our views while bearing true faith and allegiance to our constitution.

Let us not declare people who hold different views from us enemies. Opposing views help us chart a way forward that all can find a way to support. If we take only views from one side without considering the other side we begin to list to that side, taking on water and are at the risk of sinking.

It sounds like this is an opportunity for a meaningful cup of coffee.

D. Styer
