Popular ‘Fall Colors’ map invites autumn tourism

If some of your favorite memories are of family trips by car, you’ll be glad the popular Plumas County Fall Color Guide is once again available for inspired drives and adventures throughout the Lost Sierra region.

“Visit the Lost Sierra and discover the spectacular fall colors, then stop by our Tourist Center in Graeagle by the big white barn,” said Audrey Ellis, executive director of the Lost Sierra Chamber of Commerce, which publishes the guide with sponsorship from Camp Layman and the Feather River RV and Mobile Home Park.

The publication includes a helpful foliage identification list and easy-to-navigate map where the best viewings of the changing season can be found. Both visitors and locals are encouraged to enjoy hiking, biking, golf, fishing and other recreational opportunities.

Recommended destinations include a comprehensive checklist of Chester and Lake Almanor; Feather River Canyon; Indian Creek and Indian Valley; Quincy and the Bucks Lake area; La Porte Road and Cromberg; Graeagle and Lake Basin Recreation Area; Portola, Lake Davis and Beckwourth; and the Little Last Chance Creek and Frenchman Lake area.

According to the guide, the best weather for producing intense autumn colors is a combination of dry, sunny days followed by cool, but not freezing, dry nights. And the best time to spot the most fall color in Plumas County is approximately the third week of October through early November.

Pick up a copy of the guide at local businesses or find it weekdays at the Lost Sierra Tourist Center at 8989 Highway 89 in Graeagle. For more information, call 836-6811 or check online at DiscoverTheLostSierra.com.
