Prescribed burning underway at Feather River College
A prescribed burn is being conducted at the Feather River College campus today, April 5, and tomorrow.
FRC students and alumni are assisting CalFire and the other agencies with this project to help reduce the fuels in and around campus. Here is a link to the website with burn day events listed, and includes information from College President Kevin Trutna as to why the work is important for the campus and its hoped for second bachelor’s degree.
The college recently submitted an application to offer a Bachelor of Science in Ecosystem Restoration and Applied Fire Management. Graduates will be trained to respond to, and help prevent, catastrophic wildfires that have damaged much of the region. The new degree proposal would equip students with the education and skills necessary to meet critical regional workforce needs related to healthy forest management, prescribed fire, and other techniques to promote healthy forest ecology, as well as restoration of burned forest and riparian ecosystems.
Today’s burn is an example of what will be learned with this degree.
