Residents weigh in on what Main Street Chester should look like

In April, the Plumas County Transportation Commission (PCTC) offered Chester residents the chance to become a major force in deciding what the face and nature of Main Street Chester would look like.  On Tuesday, Nov. 29, PCTC along with the engineering and planning companies of GHD and Green Dot Transportation Solutions, hosted a second community workshop that displayed the recommendations received at the first workshop.

The theme of all three assemblies has been to create a plan for Main Street that will improve safety, provide better access for pedestrian and bicycles and better parking and access to merchants, and improve the aesthetic appeal of the community. Based on the community input from workshop #1, they came back with possible ideas on three main focus areas that would enhance a throughfare that is made up of two traffic lanes and a center “turn” lane which would also be used for snow plowing in the winter.

Each of the three focus areas feature a different priority factor, but it was stressed that the final result will most likely be a compilation of all three.

Option one prioritized landscaping; option 2 prioritized pedestrians and option 3 prioritized parking. The attendees broke up into groups to discuss and review the three boards and after roughly 30 minutes the voting consensus was that option 2 (pedestrians) would be the best option to start the footprint. The next step, based on the community input, is to take these ideas and the PCTC will return with a more concise draft.  Tamy Quigley, CalTrans Senior Transportation Planner for this area, noted that there will be some other projects going on in the basin over the next few years with Main Street as probably the largest and furthest out. That means Chester has time to plan the best possible scenario.

Most important at this time is that a larger part of the community gets involved in the process.  If you haven’t been attending the workshops you are missing out on an opportunity to have a positive impact on your community. Plumas County Transportation Commission Director Jim Graham stressed that the success of this project is dependent on a maximum participation from residents in the basin.
