Silent auction benefits the library, begins Feb. 1

The Friends of the Library are happy to announce that they’re presenting another Silent Auction at Plumas Bank in downtown Quincy. The auction will officially begin on Tuesday, Feb. 1, and will run through noon on Friday, Feb. 11.  Their auctions feature items that are of special interest or higher value than their average book sale offerings.

Some of the best love poems of all time make the perfect Valentine gift. Photo submitted

Included in this auction is an antique copy of “Sonnets from the Portuguese” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The most famous of these sonnets is the one that begins “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” This volume of love poems makes the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for someone you care about.

Also in this auction are several sets of books. These include a ten-volume set of Great Books of the World. This is a great way to begin or augment your collection of the greatest works of literature and philosophy. There’s also a beautifully boxed set of the works of Proust. And for exciting adventure, there’s a 13-volume set of the Jack Aubrey sea-faring novels (remember “Master & Commander”?).

Maybe the most interesting item is a new 6-volume set of novels entitled “Griffin & Sabine: An Extraordinary Correspondence.” These novels are part romance and part mystery, told in multi-media format. Each page contains a letter that must be pulled from its own envelop to allow you to fully immerse yourself in the correspondence between these two mysterious lovers. This is a unique Valentine’s gift for that special person with imagination.

You’ll have the opportunity to browse through these books at your leisure during normal banking hours.  And you can bid on as many of them as you like, as often as you like. Detailed instructions are available alongside the bid items.

This Silent Auction is taking place in lieu of The Friends’ previously scheduled February book sale. Out of an abundance of caution The Friends have decided to cancel their big quarterly sales until the threat of Covid has decreased. They are, however, still accepting book donations in the hope that they’ll be able to resume their quarterly sales in May.

In the meanwhile, come spend some time at the Silent Auction at Plumas Bank in Quincy. By placing a bid, you’ll be supporting your library, and you may just end up with some beautiful new books to while away these dark winter evenings.

The Friends of the Library thank Plumas Bank for once again providing them with this opportunity.
