Soroptimists sponsor September blood drive

Known for exceptional service to their community, Soroptimist International of Quincy will sponsor the next blood drive Tuesday, Sept. 10, from noon to 6 p.m.

“This isn’t the Soroptimists’ first rodeo, so to speak,” said local drive coordinator Susan Christensen. “They’ve sponsored our drives before, and current president, Totsy Beck, told me they’d be glad to do it again!”

As always, the drive will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the corner of Bucks Lake Road and Bellamy Lane across from the hospital.

Many donors automatically sign up for future drives when they give blood. Repeat donors are a special breed, said Christensen. “We count on our ‘regulars,’ who give up an hour of their time every three months just to give back to their community.”

She adds, however, that new donors are always welcome, and encourages those who have thought about giving blood but haven’t yet done so to give it a try this time around. The gift of blood can help save a life, but an added reward is the treats donors consume after their donation. “Soroptimists make fabulous cookies,” added Christensen.

Donors can call Christensen at 283-2424 to sign up, or they can go online at bloodhero.comand make their own appointment by entering the code QUINCY.

Previous donors who have set up an account with Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services) can go online the morning of the drive and answer the interview questions in advance. Just print out a “Fast Track” ticket (or snap a picture of it with your phone) and present it at the drive to save time.
