Three skunks help Terry win weekly cribbage tourney

We had a nice even 12 players for our first sanctioned tournament of the 2019-20 season when we met Saturday, Sept. 7, which included two guests, Dave and Beth Clark from San Jose.

Susan Terry took first place totaling a nice 15 game points earned with six wins on the day (Three of those victories were skunks!).

Ron Morgan was a close second with 14 game points based on seven wins.

Jan Cook was right on Ron’s tail and came in third with a 14/6 scorecard. Remember, the winner is determined by the total game points they get during the day’s play: two points for a win, three if you skunk your opponent and zero when you lose. The second tiebreaker is the total number of games you win, followed by the net spread points.

Unfortunately, Frank Davis from Quincy played in his last cribbage tournament that day coming in fourth with a 12/5 score. Frank passed away in his sleep Sept. 12. We not only lost a member of our club, he was a good friend and a formidable cribbage player. We’ll miss him.

As you may recall, ACC lifetime points are awarded to players who score 12 or more game points in the nine-game format so all four of the players who placed received lifetime points.

There were two 4-of-a-kind hands dealt that day, one to Janet Miller and the other to Dave Boynton. Janet drew the high card and won the 4-of-a-Kind Pot. But that’s okay because Dave also held the only 24-point hand and won that side pot.

The Graeagle Peggers Grassroots Cribbage Club meets at Gumba’s Pizza in Blairsden every Saturday for a nine-game tournament. Check-in is at 10:45 a.m. and play begins at 11 a.m.The American Cribbage Congress sanctions the tournaments that qualify when we field enough contestants each week.
