Trail Angel receives thank you note from PCT hiker

Quincy resident Gerie Bunch helped a Pacific Crest Trail hiker this summer and was pleased to hear from her and learn that she had met her goal to make it to the Canadian border.

“I saw her crossing the Post Office parking lot, and we smiled ‘hello,'” Bunch recalled. “Then as I was leaving the post office, she was walking down Lawrence Street. I pulled over to see if she wanted a ride.”

Soon her pack and walking poles were stowed in the back of Bunch’s car. They made a quick stop at the Pet Store and then Bunch gave the hiker a lift up to Bucks summit where the PCT crosses the road.

“On the way up to the Summit, we chatted about her adventures on the PCT and what types of difficulties she encountered and why she was making such a trek.  Amazing!” Bunch said.  “At the top, we exchanged information and I snapped a photo of her heading back out on the trail, thinking I probably wouldn’t hear from her. ”

But then she sent me this lovely letter.  It felt good to be a “Trail Angel.”

Hi Gerie:

I am the PCT hiker you met in Quincy.  You were kind enough to go out of your way to give me a ride back to the PCT trail head.  Well, this old gal finished the hike on Aug 27.  I hiked the whole thing except a short section still closed from the OR Lionshead fire in 2020. Shortly after Quincy, I met up with a couple women in their early 50’s and hiked the rest of the trail with them.   What a journey!  One of the main things I experienced on the trail was the absolute kindness and generosity of the people in the small towns along the way.  It never ceased to amaze me.  In a small way it helped to restore my faith and hope for humanity.
Please know, your trust and generosity was and is very much appreciated.
All the very best to you!
