Vernon Eugene Brooke

Vernon Eugene Brooke, 88, of Lake Davis, California, passed away on May 23, 2023. Vern, as he was affectionately known, was born on July 19, 1934, in Holtville, CA, to Vernon Leroy Brooke and Florence. He attended Portola High School and joined the US Army in 1955, where he served in the artillery for three years and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), and Good Conduct Medal.

Vern was a skilled carpenter, electrician, mechanic, and plumber. He loved to build things and was known for his kindness, gentleness, and sense of humor. Vern enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing pocket billiards. He was a member of Portola Station Baptist Church. He worked in Fleet Services as a mechanic at Sierra Pacific Power Company, Reno, Nevada. He retired in 1996 and then Vern and his wife June moved to their cabin at Lake Davis, California.

Vern is survived by his wife, June Brooke; and his sons, Vernon Jr. (Veronica), Frank (Marybeth), Joseph (Denise), and John (Robin). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Maria, Christopher, Jacqueline, Jamie, Carrie, Katelyn, Kenneth, Joseph, Angelique, Bella, and Barry; as well as his great-grandchildren, Oliver, Liam, Audrey, and Wyatt; and brother Thomas Kent Ames. Vern is preceded in death by his parents and his infant brother Kenneth, brother Keith and sister Jeanne Jennings, and former wife, Mary Brooke.
