Wondering when it’s best to travel?

It’s been tough going for those trying to get through the mountains. John Kolb, from Plumas County Search and Rescue, estimates that the team rescued at least 50 vehicles that were stuck in snow over the holiday weekend into Monday and prevent even more motorists from attempting to use closed roads. He reported that plowed parking lots in the Portola and Graeagle areas were filled with stuck motorists with nowhere to go during this period.

Though the situation is slightly improving, highways 80 and 50 remain closed and various other highways have closed and reopened. Those who make the trek report treacherous conditions.

So when is the best time to travel? With a new round of low-level snow coming in tonight into Wednesday, Dec. 29, the National Weather Service out of Sacramento reports that it should get better beginning Thursday. Until then travel is discouraged.
