Notice for Opportunity to Comment: Upper Butte Creek Forest Health Project.

The Almanor Ranger District, Lassen National Forest, is initiating scoping for the Upper Butte Creek Forest Health Project. The primary objectives of the project are to reduce the risk of high severity wildland fire, improve the health and vigor of forested areas, meadows, and hardwood stands, improve stream and road conditions, and restore portions of severely burned areas in the Dixie Fire. The project is a collaborative effort between the Lassen National Forest and the Butte County Resource Conservation District.

The project area is located approximately 17 air-miles southwest of Chester and 33 air-miles northeast of Chico, near and around the communities of Butte Meadows and Jonesville in California. The project area includes 19,895 of National Forest System lands in Butte, Plumas, and Tehama counties. It occupies all or portions of Township 27N, Range 4E, Sections 25, 26, 27, 28, 33, 34, 35, and 36; Township 27N, Range 5E, Sections 31, 32, and 33; and Township 26N, Range 4E, Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 22, 23, 24, Mount Diablo Meridian.

A proposed action, including maps, of the proposed project activities is available online at the Lassen National Forest website https://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/lassen/landmanagement/projects. The proposed action is also available for review at the Almanor Ranger District Office in Chester, California.

The public is invited to a meeting to learn more about the project on April 20, 2023, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Butte County Library, Chico Branch, 1108 Sherman Ave, Chico, California.

Specific written comments on the proposed project should be received by May 2, 2023, so that they can be considered early during project development and analysis. The Forest Service will consider your scoping comments to help identify issues associated with the project.
