A hot August in the Almanor Basin

By Dale Knutsen

Special to Plumas News

Temperatures in the Lake Almanor basin ran considerably warmer than usual during August.  Both the average morning low (48.9° F.) and afternoon high (90.1° F.) were more than 5 degrees above the norm.  And while the peak temperature of 98° did not set any records, it was the consistently warm highs and lows that made for a toasty month.  It was also a very dry period, with only 0.01 inch of rainfall registered at the Prattville monitoring site.  But that part is really not unusual.  We generally need to wait until October to have reasonable expectations of significant moisture.
