A winter storm watch in place for this weekend

The National Weather Service is warning that a late season storm will bring periods of moderate to heavy snow to the southern Cascade and northern Sierra starting Saturday night and continuing into Monday. The heaviest snow is expected on Sunday and travel is not recommended; chain controls and travel delays can be expected.

Snow levels will be between 4,500 and 5,500 feet and will fall locally down to 3,500 feet Monday morning.

Moderate to heavy snow is possible in western Plumas County. Travel will be very difficult. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, with localized amounts up to 20 inches above 7,000 feet, are possible.

Significant reductions in visibility are possible along with chain controls and travel delays.

Rain and snow are predicted for the Quincy, Graeagle and Portola areas as well. The brunt of the storm is expected on Sunday.
