Allen Shellnut
February 9, 1932 – October 2, 2021
Allen Shellnut, age 89, passed away at his home on October 2, 2021. He was born in Long Beach, California, on February 9th, 1932, but spent his formative years growing up in the Redwood forests of Leggett, California. After high school, Allen attended Santa Rosa Junior College where he was a standout linebacker on their football team. He also developed a love of art, and after earning teaching credential at San Jose State College, became an art teacher.
He started teaching at Chester High School in the Fall of 1963 and quickly earned a reputation for unusual teaching methods such as sleeper holds for unruly students and tearing San Francisco phone books in half with his bare hands. But he was also an outstanding art teacher having infected his passion for art to hundreds of students. He was a much beloved teacher as he taught there for over 40 years before he finally retired. He also coached football (briefly) and skiing, his two favorite sports.
He is survived by his four children; Sandy (Durango, CO), Cindy Long (Boise, ID), Terry (Watford City, ND), and Kevin of Chester who was by his side when he passed.
There will be a memorial service for Mr. Shellnut at the Chester High School Football field on October 16th starting at 3:00 p.m.
