Do Elks have wings?

Since 2007, ladies from the Lake Almanor Elks Lodge 2626 have been hosting a Christmas Angels event to give a helping hand to families that may be struggling during the holiday season.

The goal is to provide each child with a warm winter coat along with boots, gloves and hat, something to read and a gift or two.

Each family is also provided with basket that contains the makings for a special Christmas Day repast.

To complement their food drive the original Angel fundraising event featured a spaghetti dinner and then for the last six years the ladies have hosted a “Soup, Bread & Dessert” tasting.

This year’s event was held at the Elk’s Lodge on Oct. 19 with a social hour beginning at 5 p.m. Tasting of the 14 different soups and various breads and desserts started at 5:45 and the silent auction for a variety of goodies spanned the evening.

With seating for 100 guests and a $15 ticket cost, it was quickly a sold out event and the evening was considered a big success by the organizers as they garnered almost $3,700 toward helping local families.

Jane Scott, who helped organize the event, also expressed thanks to Holiday Market, Dollar General and several other local businesses that help each year with food and gift donations.

Donations for the Christmas Angels Project are always appreciated and can be mailed to: Lake Almanor Elks Lodge 2626 at P O Box 1539, Chester, CA  96020. (Donations are tax deductible.)
